It’s so nice seeing Shuma and hearing from you again. Thank you for writing again because I knew that it must be so hard living with the loss of your mother while so far away from the rest of your Canadian family. I’m sure your husband and his family have been very supportive, but it’s not the same as being with the people who share many of your memories. Shuma still looks adorable, and I’m pretty sure you still look absurdly young for your age given the last photos of you I saw. Take care.
I’ve been following your life adventure for what seems like nearly a decade… is that even possible? There hasn’t been an update in nearly a year… is there a new blog or has life simply become all encompassing? I miss your updates and I wonder how big Shuma has become! I thought when I moved back to Canada in 2003, after living in Japan for three years, that I was done with overseas adventures. Now I’m about to embark on a new endeavour that will include my husband and three sons!

I have been following your blog for the longest time.. I always felt a sort of support from reading your blog as I’m also a Canadian living in Japan (from the GTA area too!). The difference being, I am a first generation Japanese born in Canada. And because of this, many of the shocking cultural differences I felt here were often laughed at or ignored because my blood was Japanese. Reading your blog made me feel not quite so alone and I truly thank you for posting your thoughts and memories (and great recipes too). I’m sure you are probably quite busy, and maybe past the blogging stage of your life, which I think is totally fine. I Just wanted to say thank you and hope you and you family are doing well, wherever in the world you are!
I have followed your adventures for quite a while, and have been very Gary to see your recent posts. I love seeing Shuma grow up, I enjoy reading your tales.

I came across your blog while on a Google search for when and how to announce a pregnancy in Japan. I’m a few months pregnant, and I have a number of relatives living in Japan. (I live in the US, but my mother is Japanese and my late father Irish American.) Needless to say, I ended up reading some of your other posts. I really enjoy your writing, sense of humor, and candor. Little Shuma is just remarkable. Having lived some years in Japan, and perpetually feeling split between the two countries, it was really comforting to read your stories. Thank you so much for sharing and I hope you continue to post.
